Intrathecal pumps are used to deliver small dosages of powerful pain medicine directly into your spinal cord. The pump is planted beneath your skin and is located in the abdomen. This implant starts with supplying local anesthesia to the patient.

After the subject is asleep, the specialists then roll the body onto one side and the abdomen area as well as the intrathecal space area on the back is shaved. Then, a small incision is made on the affected area and the catheter is placed. It is then passed around the torso to the abdomen area to be connected to the pump.

After it is placed, the specialists then place the pump by creating a 6 inch incision in the abdomen. After the pump is connected and is operational, the incisions are properly stitched and dressing is applied.
