As the name sounds, this kind of pain arises from a damaged, torn or herniated disc. The disc is the rubbery material as said earlier between each vertebra that prevents each vertebra from colliding with each other. There are different intensities to discogenic back pain, and the treatment depends on the severity of the pain as well as the patient’s age and activity level.
If the pain is severe and has also started to restrict the patient’s movement, a surgery may be needed. Otherwise, medication and other pain management exercises are advised by the experts.
Diagnostic discography procedure is sometimes necessary to identify disc pain generator when more than one disc appears damaged on imaging studies including MRI. Discography helps to diagnose discogenic back pain and allows a spine surgeon to select the disc level for surgery.
